Today in this lab we created different molecules out of gumdrops and toothpicks. We used toothpicks to represent bonds between atoms and used double or even triple toothpicks respectively to represent those types of bonds. Before we did this however, we learned about how molecules bond. In class we did a worksheet where we made for structures for different atoms. We figured out the structures using the periodic table and our knowledge of how electrons are arranged in atoms. We learned about valence electrons and how most atoms need a full shell of 8 valence electrons. After learning this we learned how to draw the dot structures of different molecules. This included drawing in valence electrons for all the atoms and the bonds they created. I also learned that the different atoms like to be as far away from each other as possible when forming a molecule. Based on these findings, i can conclude that no molecules are arranged in straight lines
